The term “Emotional Freedom Techniques” (EFT) was coined by founder Gary Craig, a Stanford trained engineer, who developed EFT based on his knowledge of acupuncture and meridian work. Craig was a student of psychologist Rodger Callahan, who created the original form of tapping. Dr. Callahan’s method utilized specific tapping points in a sequence that was dependent on the subject matter about which the client had chosen to tap. Craig developed a more simplified sequence that could be used to tap through regardless of the reason for tapping. He found that applying gentle pressure to specific points on the surface of the body, known as meridian endpoints, activates channels of energy, identifies blocks, and clears them through physically tapping with your fingertips. This self-healing technique allows the client to access negative emotions, memories of traumatic events, and limiting beliefs, which are stored in our subconscious. This video demonstrates how EFT combines the power of touch (tapping) with the ability to access our subconscious feelings (talking) to heal our bodies, minds, and spirits.
This self-healing tool can be used to clear beliefs that block us from healing and living joyful, abundant lives. How does this work? Tapping targets the amygdala. This part of the brain is designed to serve as an alarm and only be activated in emergency situations where protection and survival are needed (our fight, flight, or freeze response). The amount of stress we are under on a daily basis keeps this alarm on, at low levels, but can be draining physically and emotionally over time. The simple yet powerful act of tapping on these meridian endpoints sends a signal to our body’s alarm system that it is safe to relax. When remembering and vocalizing traumatic events or negative emotions while tapping, we can stay calm, feel safe, and think clearly about what is causing our pain. This allows us to identify and clear any blocks of which we are consciously unaware. It is then that we discover what a major role our emotions play in the chronic pain we feel. EFT is a powerful healing technique.
